What is Black Friday?

Originally from the USA, Black Friday marks the day after Thanksgiving, where stores and webshops screw up the prices and offer extra good offers. Some call it the start of the Christmas shopping, and Americans use Black Friday in a big way to pamper themselves and their loved ones with everything from shoes to new smartphones and computers.

In fact, the day since 2005 has been the busiest shopping day in the United States, and on Black Friday in 2013 alone, Americans shopped for nearly $ 60 billion. You have to multiply that number by about 6.5 to get it in Danish kroner! However, there is the difference that in the US it is primarily old stock items, where we of course come up with good offers on even brand new products on Black Friday.

 Why is it called Black Friday?

The name “Black Friday” dates back to the 1950’s, when in Philadelphia it was used to describe the huge number of cars and pedestrians that filled the streets the day after Thanksgiving. So there was variety of people, hence the name Black Friday.

Later, the phenomenon became known throughout the United States, and a more nuanced explanation is that the name actually describes the turning point in the year, when stores really get sales going and are guaranteed to get black numbers on the bottom line.
